Women in Business

I just got back from picking up my dog, Paul, at his doggie daycare in Belmont, MA. I heard about these kinds of places maybe 6 years ago, and I thought they sounded absolutely ridiculous. Now I know that Paul would get nowhere near the amount of exercise or socialization that he does, if I didn’t take him to the Crate Escape. Anyway, as I was picking him up, I saw that near their register they had brochures for small businesses in the Cambridge area. I spoke to this woman, who I believe to be the co-owner of the place, about J.Sullivan Design. She even has a children’s book written and illustrated about her Jack Russell Terrier, Ernestine. It’s a paperback and you can purchase it at the daycare.

I told her about the newest activity with our business which is being listed as an invitation vendor on: theknot.com, weddingchannel.com, and partyspot.com, as of yesterday. YIPPEE! She told me that she owns a small jewelry store in Cambridge, which when I know the name of it, I’ll post info on this blog. Like the dog that enjoys a good tummy scratch, she and I were trying to figure out a way to scratch each other’s “business backs”. I gave her a business card, and showed her my own wedding invitation (designed by Jillian), which weirdly enough, was in my car. This woman loves Paul: he makes several appearances in my invitation, so it somehow made sense to show it to her.

All this is to say, that I think small businesses are great-I say this, especially after seeing all the hard work that has gone into J.Sullivan Design. And I want to extend a hand to other small business owners, especially women, who may be looking to share clients, or to at least swap stories about being in the same small business “boat”. Jillian and I would be happy to send our own business cards, and we’d love to see your cards and your websites.

I know that I wouldn’t be motivated to work on this business without Jillian. I can’t wait to celebrate this week’s successes with her over a champagne cocktail on Friday. So far we’re having a great time, but we’d love to find out about what’s going on with other small businesses, so we have some idea of what to expect in the upcoming year.
